๐ก Change a Lightbulb
• Turn off the light switch first. Wait for the bulb to cool if it's been on.
• Identify the fitting: bayonet (push and twist) or screw (twist to remove).
• Match the wattage and fitting type of the replacement bulb.
• Always buy LED — they use 80% less energy and last 10x longer.
๐ Doing Laundry
• Check the label. 30C works for most things. Hot water for towels and bedding.
• Darks with darks. Lights with lights. Separate anything that might bleed colour.
• Don't overfill the machine — clothes need room to move.
• Clothes dry faster on an airer than a radiator (better for the walls too).
• Iron: steam setting on. Move constantly. Don't leave the iron sitting still — it will scorch.
๐ฝ Basic DIY
• Blocked drain? Try a plunger first. Then baking soda + vinegar. Then call a plumber.
• Running toilet? Lift the cistern lid — often a flap or float has come loose. Easy to fix.
• Hanging a picture: Use a spirit level. Drill into a wall plug, not just plasterboard. Get a pipe/cable detector (£10 from B&Q) — never guess.
• YouTube is your best friend for DIY. Search the exact problem — there's a tutorial for everything.
๐งน Cleaning Routines
• Daily: Wipe kitchen surfaces, wash up, hang coats/clothes.
• Weekly: Hoover, mop hard floors, clean bathroom, change bed sheets.
• Monthly: Clean oven, descale kettle, wipe skirting boards, clean fridge.
• White vinegar + water in a spray bottle cleans almost everything and costs pennies.
• A clean home directly improves mental health — it's not just about appearances.
๐ฉน Basic First Aid
• Cut: Apply pressure with a clean cloth. Elevate if possible. If it doesn't stop bleeding in 10 mins or is deep, go to A&E or urgent care.
• Burn: Cool under cold (not ice cold) running water for 10 minutes. Never use butter or toothpaste.
• CPR: 30 chest compressions (hard and fast, centre of chest), 2 rescue breaths. Repeat. The NHS has a free online course — do it.
• Keep a basic first aid kit at home: plasters, antiseptic, bandage, paracetamol, antihistamine.
